Printed on India paper with top edge gilt, blind-stamped monogram TH on the front which is also ruled.. 413pp with a map of Wessex at the end. Slight browning to the endpapers but all clean and tightly bound. These 12 shorter novels had previously only appeared in magazines and journal. Contents include: A Changed Man, The Waiting Supper, Alicia's Diary, The Grave by the Handpost, Enter a Dragoon, A Tryst at an Ancient Earthwork. Hardy was a changed man himself when he published these tales in October 1913. Outwardly he had changed from a literary enfani terrible, 'determined to exhibit' what the public wished to hide, into a Grand Old Man; inwardly, from an unhappy husband recommending easier divorce ('marriage should not thwart nature'), into an inconsolable widower. A scholarly joke made by a character in one of the 'other tales' had proved for their author a bitter truth. Marriage, said the rector in 'The Waiting Supper' (1887) was a 'Tragedy... It is full of crises and catastrophes, and ends with the death of one of the actors.' Hardy's own marriage bad just ended that way, and Florence Dugdale (apparently dating its decline from 1893) had called it a 'tragedy of twenty years'.
