1 Wood, Thomas Cobbers: a personal record of a journey from Essex, in England, to Australia, Tasmania, and some of the reefs and islands of the Coral Sea, made in the years 1930, 1931, and 1932
London Oxford University Press 1935 Hardcover Very Good Good
Apart from music, the prevailing passions of Wood's life were the British Empire, foreign travel and the sea; his writing is instinct with a fervent Imperial sentiment. He came to Australia in 1930 to conduct examinations for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and spent some two years travelling across the country. On his return to England, he wrote Cobbers (London, 1934), still the most perceptive and captivating characterization of Australia and its people ever written by a visitor. Wood revelled in the company of 'hard boiled citizens' and in the ways of ordinary men and women, but a deep sense of beauty and poetry combined with affectionate humour to produce his memorable descriptions, particularly of regional differences. As a collector of folk songs, he was so impressed by Waltzing Matilda—which he thought good enough 'to be the unofficial national anthem of Australia'—that he included its words and music in Cobbers. 256 clean well bound pp includes index

Whilst you can fill a great many Wiki pages with cooks' info we will restrict ourselves to bite-sized info pieces for some well known cooks/chefs, both international & Australian.  Each page will have a brief bio, some personal points and a sample recipe. All the pages will be "G" rated, yes, even Gordon Ramsay's page!

COOKS TOUR

  Our personal recommendation -
We deal with lots of foodie titles and without a doubt there are those that deserve a special mention, such as this one -
Box of Beans  This is Clarissa Dickson Wright's warts and all autobiography. Most of us would agree that Jennifer & Clarissa brought personality plus to the screen with their uniquely pucker food style. A glass of red & feet up with the cat on your lap would be the right way to enjoy this fly-on-the-wall view of Clarissa's triumphs & failings. It's a book and two audio CDs at just $27. Drop us an email if you'd like it.
